Who doesn’t love the combo of peanut butter and banana? This dreamy, creamy smoothie has just a few simple ingredients and is a treat for breakfast or an afternoon pick me up. There’s also no added sugar or sweeteners because ripe banana is perfectly sweet on it’s own, and I use almond milk to keep it dairy free! Best of all it takes less than 5 minutes to whip up. Win, win, win.
I use banana for the base of pretty much any smoothie because it adds a creamy texture that you don’t get with many other fruits. But the flavor is often masked by other fruits like berries, mango, or pineapple. In this Peanut Butter and Banana Smoothie, the banana is the star of the show.
You can use frozen bananas for this if you’d like, but I just as often throw a fresh banana into the blender! Freezing is a great way to salvage bananas that are starting to get over-ripe (that is, if you don’t want to make a batch of my Chocolate Chip Banana Bread!). You just slice them up and freeze them in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet or plate, then transfer the frozen pieces into a bag or container for future use. this way the slices don’t get stuck together in the freezer and can be easily removed as needed.
If you opt to use frozen banana slices, you’ll want to use 2 cups of frozen banana and you may not need any additional ice. If using fresh, I generally add about 7 large ice cubes. You’ll have to get a feel for how thick and creamy you want your smoothie to be, and add more ice or milk as necessary to get the consistency you want.
If you’re interested, here is the link to the blender I use. I absolutely love it – it’s great for single-serve recipes like this one that you can just drink right out of the container it gets blended in. One less dish to wash is a win in my book!
I hope you enjoy this easy and refreshing smoothie!
